Wander along the golden sands of La Concha Beach or explore the architecture in the Old Town, this coastal city has something for everyone. Families love it for the kid-friendly beaches and attractions, while couples and groups are drawn to its fine dining and excellent foodie offerings.

So, you’ve booked your flight and now you’re wondering where to stay in San Sebastián. This guide will help you discover the best places, from luxury hotels to family-friendly apartments – all within walking distance of the city’s main attractions.
The city centre is compact and easy to navigate on foot. Depending on your budget and your needs, San Sebastián offers a fantastic range of accommodation, from small hotels and boutique hotels to 4-star hotels and super luxe options with modern amenities including air conditioning, coffee machines, and free WiFi.
Best areas to stay in San Sebastián
Parte Vieja (Old Town) – Great for foodies and first-time visitors
If the food, buzzing nightlife, and Basque history is a big draw, then this is the best area to stay in San Sebastián. Known as Parte Vieja, the Old Town is packed with buzzing pintxos bars, historic architecture like the Buen Pastor Cathedral, and lovely squares such as Plaza de la Constitución, where you can sit, order a cold drink and people watch.
Parte Vieja is also a great base if this is your first time visiting San Sebastián. Easily walkable and close to the beach, you won’t be far from the action.
Where to stay:
- Coeur apartments – We stayed in a two-bedroom spacious apartment with modern interiors, a cot and highchair, and right in the heart of the Old Town. It was a fabulous location, and a short walk to Centro and the beach.
- Hotel SANSEbay – A chic boutique hotel with easy access to beaches and culture. Plus, with lovely sea views across the bay.
- Hotel Atari – Much like their restaurant of the same name (Atari Gastroleku), this contemporary, cool hotel is the place to be.
Centro – Great for convenience and shopping
The city centre is ideal if you want to be close to both the beach and San Sebastián’s top shopping districts like La Brexta and San Martín. With plenty of restaurants, cultural spots like the San Telmo Museum, it’s perfect for those who want everything on their doorstep.
Where to stay:
- Sercotel Hotel Europa – Classy interiors with triple rooms, just a short walk from the beach.
- Lasala Plaza Hotel – Adults only, it offers panoramic views of the city, with a rooftop pool and bar, and light, modern rooms.
- Hotel Arbaso – Set in a biscuit-coloured apartment block, luxe spacious rooms have perfect views of the cathedral. And its restaurant, Narru, is divine.
La Concha Bay – Great for beachfront bliss
If, like me, you love to hear the sound of the waves crashing on the shoreline, then staying on the promenade at Playa de la Concha is a no-brainer. Not only does it give you direct access to this stunning semi-circular beach but the views across the bay are pretty special.
Where to stay:
- Hotel Niza – Overlooking La Concha Beach, this classic hotel features rooms with large windows, some with air-conditioned rooms and balconies.
- Costa Apartment – Ideal for families, just steps from the beach with a terrace and modern amenities.
- Villa Favorita – Located in one of the last remaining private mansions on the beach, you can expect timeless decor and elegant rooms with stunning sea views. (Note: Villa Favorita is currently undergoing renovations until March 2026).
Gros – Great for surfers and local vibes
Across the Urumea River lies Gros, the city’s laid-back neighbourhood, known for its golden Zurriola Beach – a surfing hangout. It’s less touristy, offers cheaper hotels, and is full of cafés, authentic local pintxos, and more of a local vibe.
Where to stay:
- Okako Hotel – Tucked away in the backstreets of Gro, this rustic and warm hotel has stylish rooms and a warm welcome.
- Hotel Arrizul Beach – A well-located hotel right on Zurriola Beach with views across to the Kursaal building. Rooms are bright, clean and modern.
Ondarreta Beach area – Great for families
Next to La Concha, Ondarreta is the quieter, more relaxed part of the city. It’s close to the impressive Miramar Palace, Mount Igueldo, and perfect for families who want calm surroundings and easy access to attractions.
Where to stay:
- Barceló Costa Vasca – Stylish and family-friendly, with a seasonal outdoor pool, close to Ondarreta Beach.
- Hotel Ezeizal – A peaceful setting and close to the Mount Igueldo funicular, this hotel has comfortable, interconnecting rooms for families.
- Hotel María Cristina – An iconic luxury hotel known for opulence, exceptional service, and fine dining. A must if you’re looking to splurge.
