Halloween has always been a huge occasion for Americans. Our US friends take pride in trick-or-treating, scary costumes and houses that have been transformed into spooky lairs. Draped cobwebs and moving giant spiders, dry ice and inflatable tombstones are all part of the holiday celebrations. In the last few years, we Brits have also begun embracing Halloween. And while we may not go to the same lengths as those across the pond, it is gaining in popularity. We love it in our household – hanging up decorations, choosing costumes, getting stocked up on sweet treats and, of course, trying to get the biggest fattest pumpkins ready to be carved.
Although it’s easy to buy pumpkins at the local supermarket, you can make more of a day of it by picking them yourselves, extending the fun and having a family outing all at the same time. Here is a pick of the best places to go pumpkin picking in Surrey. And these Surrey farms are also accessible from the city, so great for pumpkin picking near London, too.

Crockford Bridge Farm, Addlestone
Crockford Bridge Farm is one of our favourite PYOs in the area. Their first pumpkin patch opened to keen pickers over 15 years ago so they do know a thing about growing these orange vegetables. After spending time picking your crop, you are also allowed to carve them there on the field (with your own knife) saving lots of mess back home – but don’t forget to bring your own bags!
This year, the growing season has been particularly difficult due to the long drought. For this reason, they will operate for limited hours. Halloween fancy dressing is still encouraged, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities. You will also be able to eat burgers and hot dogs at the farm café and visit the tea and ice cream parlour.
Booking is essential as there will be timed-ticked entries. Adults pay £4 and children aged 1 to 14 pay £2. If you just want to buy a locally-grown pumpkin, head to their Pumpkin Market – Crockford’s Corner – to buy one; no booking is necessary.

Garsons Farm, Esher
It’s easy to get too carried away at Garsons’ Pick Your Own with so many fields primed for the taking on 155 acres of land. A Farm Pass is required before you head to Garson’s to do any fruit or vegetable picking, so you’ll need to boo in advance.

Head to the farm during early October and you’ll find several fields open for pumpkin picking. Garsons usually organise fun activities for children during October with amazing spooky storytelling, guess the ‘Ghost’ pumpkin weight, colouring competition and pumpkin word trails. There is no information available on their website about what’s in store, but I’m sure it will be fantastic. Don’t forget to check out the other vegetable fields, which are included in the Farm Pass. The website will let you see the available dates and times.

Priory Farm, Redhill
Although we tend to go to Priory Farm for its brilliant Discovery Trail, Priory Farm Halloween goes to the next level! Not only can you choose the perfect pumpkin among 10,000 and learn how to carve it with a brilliant carving kit but, you can also ride on a tractor to the pumpkin fields, too. The Halloween Trail At Discovery Land is a fun outdoor Halloween-themed walk through ancient woodland, lakes and meadows. A horrid prize awaits all those who complete it!
Booking is essential for the tractor rides and Halloween Trail and there are various dates from the beginning of October through to the 1 November. The trail is £8 per person aged over 2, while the tractor ride is £5 per person aged over 1. Check the available dates and times on the website.

Secretts of Milford, Godalming
Secretts is a 150-acre farm located in the heart of Surrey. They have been organising a fantastic “Pick Your Own Pumpkin Week” for years. However, the event will not take place in 2022. This is not a permanent closure, so stay tuned for next year.
Not only do Secretts of Milford in Godalming have special pumpkin measures to determine the exact size, but they also grow a wide variety from impressively large gourds to tiny ones perfect for little hands to grab. Their Pumpkin Week has been hugely popular and has seen the farm grow an astonishing 30,000 pumpkins to keep up with demand. In addition to tractor rides to the pumpkin field, Secretts also have children’s Halloween activities and a pumpkin-themed menu such as pumpkin curry and pumpkin cake. I hope they will re-open for pumpkin season soon.

Bocketts Farm Park, Leatherhead
As you may remember, we love visiting Bocketts Farm, which is close to home. And you can now pick your own pumpkins there, too. This year, they are hosting a Witches and Wizards Week between the 22nd and 30th October. There will be a talking reptile roadshow, a creepy craft corner, a “spooktacular” quiz trail, tractor and pony rides, a heated indoor play barn and much more. You can definitely make a full day of it. Because of this, tickets are more expensive.

Off-peak days are a little cheaper. Advance booking is essential. The farm is open 7 days a week from 10am till 5:30pm.
Bocketts Farm Park Young Street, Fetcham, Leatherhead, KT22 9BS
Tulleys Farm, Crawley
Looking for the biggest pumpkin farm and the coolest Halloween-themed events? You’ll have to travel to Crawley, in West Sussex, not far from Redhill. Tulleys Farm grows one million pumpkins on 90 acres of land. Little ones will love the live-roaming characters on the farm: Gourdy the Jester, Sage the Wizard, Folly the Scarecrow and The Queen of the Harvest.
There are 30 photo opportunities in the form of vintage pickup trucks and more to help you take home fantastic memories. You’ll also find a pumpkin village where you can eat some delicious food, including burgers and apple cider doughnuts, and sip craft beer and cocktails.
This year, the farm is organising Pumpkin Nights, too. You’ll be able to experience pumpkin picking and the lively farm under the stars.
Booking your tickets in advance is essential. You will be able to see available dates and times on the website. Prices go from £3 to £10 per ticket. Under 2s go free.

My Pumpkin Picking Trip Top Tips
Here are my top tips for a fun, dry, and successful pumpkin-picking trip.
- Bring wellies – the fields are muddy at this time of year, so it’s best to have a pair each in the car
- Take waterproofs – with advance booking, you might end up going on a rainy day
- Wear a warm jacket if you go late, especially to the evening events
- If you’re taking the pumpkin home, make a plan for it: what will you cook? How will you carve it?
- Choose a pumpkin that’s solid to the touch and is a rich orange colour
- Leave at least 5 inches of stem when you cut it off the vine and never carry it by the stem.
