Relief flooded through me when, after nearly six and a half hours on the N2 Garden Route, the little flag symbol finally popped up on our sat nav. Better still was cresting a hill to an epic view of the Wilderness coastline, sand and sea stretching as far as we could see.
Dune Beach House Wilderness
A couple of minutes after turning off the main road onto Die Duin, we found it. The Dune Beach House, sleek and modern behind its wall. We were happy just to be out of the car, and happier still when we were welcomed inside and shown through.
Before the tour, we stopped to take it in. A bright, tastefully decorated lounge, elegant but homely, and then the Indian Ocean glinting through the glass doors at the back.
Our room, Africa, impressed us too. A good size, and although it didn’t have a sea view, a path led to our own private deck looking straight out to sea. In the time it took us to stand on the beach and gawp, our luggage was in, and an extra bed had been made up for Monkey.
It doesn’t happen often, but we felt an instant connection with the place and knew the next four days would be good ones.
A stylish beach house that still welcomes children
Owned by Gary and Melisa, the Dune Beach House wouldn’t look out of place in a glossy magazine. It’s warm and stylish without being pretentious, and the personal touches are everywhere, from the artwork on the walls to the flowers Melisa picks at the market.
For all its polish, there’s no air of superiority. You won’t feel you can’t sit on the sofas or that the children are about to be shushed. Families are part of the fabric of the place, and that easy, informal feel is what made our stay so relaxing.
And the view. From our deck and the breakfast room, the endless sand and churning blue had me sitting and staring, breathing, repeating. We even started daydreaming aloud about how on earth we could move in for good.
Where Dune Beach House is, and why the location wins
The location is what makes it. You’re right on Wilderness Beach with direct access down a set of wooden stairs, so you can go from your room to the sea in minutes.
Guests can sometimes spot whales and dolphins from the house, roughly between July and November. We didn’t strike lucky, but that didn’t stop Monkey from adopting the house binoculars and making it his mission.
Wilderness sits between the Kaaimans River to the west and the Goukamma Nature Reserve to the east, with the Outeniqua Mountains behind and the Indian Ocean in front. It looks out to the Touw River lagoon too, which makes it a good base for mountain biking, water skiing and river rafting.
Wilderness town is about a two-minute drive away, small and mostly made up of restaurants and cafés, with a laundromat, supermarket, pharmacy and bank. For larger shops and malls, nearby George is your best bet, around 25 minutes by car.
The rooms
There’s a handful of rooms, some sea-facing, some, like Africa, looking onto the garden. We couldn’t see the ocean from our beds, but we had direct access to the verandah and our own deck with two loungers. From the crisp white linens on the super-king bed to the comfortable armchairs and ample storage, we were happy. With four of us, plus an extra single and a cot, we still had room to spare. There was a mini bar, a Nespresso machine and satellite TV too, not that we spent much time inside using them.
The en-suite was modern and slick, with his-and-hers sinks, a big tub and a wet room shower. It was the little flourishes that surprised me. Fragrant toiletries, warm bathrobes, beach bags and towels to borrow, a laundry service. More luxury boutique hotel than bed and breakfast.
Facilities
It isn’t a huge place, but there’s plenty on offer. Free wi-fi, an honesty bar in the lounge, a swimming pool for when the beach isn’t calling, and lots of little nooks to settle into inside and out.
We could use the kitchen too, which was a real help when I needed to heat and prepare food for the baby.
The team are only too happy to share local know-how, from where to eat to what to see and do, and they’ll make reservations or arrange tours for you.
Breakfast with a sea view
Breakfast is the only meal served, but it’s one to savour. You get those sea views with your fresh coffee, plus homemade pancakes and a fruit platter piled with lychees, melon, kiwi and blueberries. There’s a good spread of bread and condiments, yoghurts and cereals too.
The best bit was the eggs, cooked any way you like with whatever you fancy alongside. I couldn’t resist a loaded omelette of cheese, bacon and mushrooms, then sensibly switched to boiled eggs after a couple of days, for the sake of my waistline.
What I loved was the fun Monkey had at breakfast. He befriended the staff and the owners’ son, and the pair of them ended up serving other guests, which made Monkey feel terribly important. I’ll add that his serving and clearing skills haven’t resurfaced since we got home.
Our verdict on Dune Beach House Wilderness
We loved every minute. Hindsight being what it is, had we known how much we’d enjoy it, we wouldn’t have moved on. We were sad to leave, Monkey most of all, after making a good friend. I even toyed with not publishing this, so no one else would discover what good value it is.
Wilderness Beach is a setting that stays with you. Watching the children play on the sand and dart in and out of the surf as the sun dropped is a picture I won’t forget.
Gary and Melisa have a winning formula. The right location, comfortable and stylish rooms, and warm, relaxed service. We didn’t feel like paying customers so much as guests in a beautiful home.

Where is Dune Beach House?
On Die Duin in Wilderness, right on the beachfront on South Africa’s Garden Route, with direct access to Wilderness Beach. It was once known as Dune Guest Lodge, so you’ll see that older name on some booking sites.
How far is it from George Airport?
About 25 minutes by car, which makes it an easy first or last stop on a Garden Route trip.
Can you walk to the beach?
Yes, straight down a set of wooden stairs from the property, and you’re on the sand within minutes.
Is it good for families?
It is. Children are welcome, there’s a pool, and the relaxed feel meant we never worried about the kids being too loud. We travelled with an older child and a baby and had plenty of space.
Can you see whales and dolphins?
Sometimes, roughly July to November. Bring patience and borrow the binoculars. We didn’t see any on our stay, so treat it as a lovely bonus rather than a given.
Is breakfast included?
Yes, and it’s the only meal served. Expect pancakes, a fruit platter, breads and cereals, and eggs cooked to order, all with a sea view. For lunch and dinner, head into Wilderness Town nearby.
