Even though it was lovely taking a nostalgic looks back at all My Travel Monkey’s Highlights of 2014, it’s even more exciting contemplating the adventures that await us in the coming year. Particularly as Christmas is over, I’m back to work, and the weather is bitingly cold, wet and dreary.

Of course, there are lots of things that can’t be planned – spontaneous day trips, country walks and seasonal attractions that will take our fancy – but I always like to look forward to something, to plan my big holidays well ahead of time. It keeps me focused and relatively happy when I have to trudge into the office.10519508175_74209c0620_o

My bucket list is constantly growing. I currently have a Top 10 which I am determined to tick off over the next five years or so, including New England, Sicily, Miami, Lapland and Japan. I also know that plans do change and not everything is set in stone. Sometimes it’s a case of going with the flow.

Back to this year and we’ve already got a few trips in the pipeline:

Hua Hin, Thailand

Hubby and I spent a lot of time travelling around Thailand back in our youth and it’s somewhere we have both wanted to return to for a long while. Which is why we decided that Monkey was now at a good age to endure a long haul flight. We’re spending two weeks in Hua Hin, situated about 2 hours drive away from Bangkok. We’re splitting our stay over two different hotels. One with a very boutiquey feel and the other, more colonial-style that has several pools and a kids club. Obviously, you’ll be hearing a lot about this particular trip as we prepare for the flight, what to pack and what we get up to while we are out there.

Greece

We haven’t quite firmed up which Greek Island we will be visiting but Corfu looks the most likely at the moment. I haven’t been to Corfu since I was a child, but we plan to grab some late summer sun and enjoy the child-friendly beaches and fantastic Greek cuisine. Greece has had a bad rap of late from shipping disasters and political uncertainty to their weak economy – and according to recent reports bookings to Greece have slowed down. Such a shame, as it’s a beautiful country and one I am looking forward to returning to.

Cotswolds

After instructions from my brother-in-law who lives in Australia, we’re planning on a mini staycation during Summer, somewhere in a quaint Cotswolds village when he and his partner come to the UK on an extended visit. We haven’t decided in which part – we’ve previously stopped over in pretty Bourton on the Water and Burford, and they’re both very charming. In fact, all the little villages and shops remind me of scenes out of Midsomer Murders – so quintessentially British. Anyone for cricket? My ideal accommodation will be something in a little stone cottage and near a village pub.

Others

Depending on our pennies, I have mooted the possibility of going to San Sebastian. I am a huge foodie, so going somewhere where there are more Michelin-starred restaurants in a mile radius is pretty much the dream for me… oh, and there’s a stunning beach. What’s not to like? Hubby has already been, but he’s quite keen to return. There’s also my annual weekend away with my friends. The last two years have seen us go to Tarifa in Spain and Palma de Mallorca. Where will we end up in 2015? Watch this space…

So, that’s pretty much our lot at the moment, and considering we’re only five days into 2015, I’ve got tons of research to be getting on with. But to me that’s the fun part (apart from the actual trip itself!) and I can’t wait to share it all with you.

What trips have you got planned of this year? I’d love to be inspired by your stories.

Happy travels to you all in 2015! Let the journey begin…
