Now, I’m not quite sure if the first few trips count, seeing as Monkey had yet to appear, but, hey, his adventure started in Berlin, in February 2011. I was about three months pregnant at this point and desperate to get away from the drudgery of work and the long British winter. Oh, hang on a minute, in essence I just swapped the British cold for the German cold… and it was worse. However, this is such a cool, vibrant city – and I definitely want to return in the Summer.
Where did we stay?
The Circus Hotel is in a fantastic location situated in Mitte and right next to the U-Bahn. The room was modern, clean and large, while the staff were super-friendly and helped recommend great places to visit – they even organised a walking tour for us. The added bonus was the price was reasonable.
Obviously, I wasn’t in need of these, but thought I would add them here for reference.
- Free baby cot/bed
- Babysitting services
- Free use of a baby monitor if you want enjoy a meal or drink in the downstairs restaurant/bar
- Kids under six can eat for free in the restaurant
- You can rent buggys, bike seats etc, just ask
All the usual guide book places. We particularly enjoyed walking around the grounds of the Charlottenburg Palace. It was beauts. Plus the Jewish Museum is architecturally stunning, and the content moving. Be warned though, Checkpoint Charlie – the name given to the Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West – is a massive tourist trap and we had to queue to get a picture with the man dressed up as a soldier!
We love burgers, dripping in cheese and with all the trimmings. It took us ages to find this place, but it was worth it. We had to wait ages for a table so don’t go when you’re in a rush. Oh and the atmosphere is really lively – The Bird.
Also you can’t go to Berlin and not sample curry wurst and chips. My husband was hungover and he claimed this ‘sorted me out!’ – Curry 36.
